CAP for Schools
Despite the Covid pandemic, in 2019-20 we worked with 8,477 children and 347 adults in 44 schools across Devon
CAP UK’s School Workshops
CAP takes a fresh approach to assault prevention, aiming to reduce fear by focusing on what children can do, rather than on what they can’t.
Our workshops are designed to build children’s confidence and self- esteem, and are lively and fun. Children learn through drama and discussion with trained facilitators, about their rights to safety, strength and freedom. We encourage them to be proud of these rights and to respect the rights of others.
Through the workshops they learn that they have the ability to protect themselves in unsafe situations.
Children who have taken part in abuse prevention programmes are three times more likely to disclose abuse than those who have not. These children also show increased skills in protective behaviours.
How it works
The childrens’ sessions
Each CAP workshop last for three hours. They can be held in a whole morning session or in three separate sessions over consecutive days. A team of two or three CAP facilitators will work with the whole class group, remaining in the classroom where the children feel comfortable and with the teacher involved in the session.
We have different programmes for:
- Nursery schools
- Primary schools
- Special schools
- Secondary schools
Rolling Programme: By operating a rolling programme CAP returns to schools every 18 months with a different input so that messages can be built on and embedded in the community
The adults’ sessions
Our whole community approach to children’s safety is a vital aspect of the CAP programme. Separate sessions are run for parents and school staff before we even start work with the children. Adult workshops aim to build confidence in protecting children.
Cost to school
CAP asks the schools to pay a small fee towards the CAP workshops, this is largely subsidised.
We raise 80% of our running costs ourselves through grants and trusts. We ask for a 20% contribution from the school. Please contact CAP UK office for the details of the costs. If finance is a problem please do get in touch and we can discuss options.
LSA – “It’s a programme that is worth every penny of cost! You can’t put a price on safeguarding a child.”
